When the spirit of the Lord is present, there is an invitation to linger, to tarry, in otherwords, to abide with Him. Throughout the scriptures, both in the Tanack and the New Testament, when the Lord descends, it is His longing to commune with His people. A tranquil, serene attitude of intense worship envelops the inner folds of one's being. The Psalmist describes it as "deep calling into deep." (1)

The concept of lingering when the spirit of the Lord is present is described clearly in the movements of the Israelites in the wilderness. "At the LORD's command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped." (2) Whether the cloud, which was the presence of the Lord rested on the tabernacle for many days or whether it stayed only from evening til moring, the tribes knew to remain encamped until the spirit lifted. The cloud that filled the tabernacle (3) was the same cloud that filled the temple of King Solomon. God was not represented in the cloud, God was the cloud. (4) The Lord came. He filled His house at its completion, while the people raised their voices in praise and adoration. (5)

In this same manner, the cloud, which was Jehovah, God, enveloped Mount Sinai when Moses met with the Lord to receive the commandments. For six days, the people gazed upon the glory of the Lord as it enveloped the mountain top. On the seventh day, "the the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud." (6) After entering the cloud, Moses lingered with the Lord for forty days and forty nights. The Spirit of the Lord desires that we linger. Savor His goodness, drink in His mercy, taste of His holiness. We are invited to sit and dine with Him at His table. Dining with the King of Kings should not be a "McDonalds" experience.

This same Spirit of the Lord rested approvingly on His son, Yeshua as He emerged from the waters of the Jordon. The Spirit is described as descending like a "dove". Its entrance is from the celestial. Its empyreal wings spread open, lighting gently, softly, silently as it freely falls from Heaven. It rests peacefully on the One whom it knows well. These are familiar shoulders. This human flesh is the manifestation of its creator and it "remains on Him". If not sure who "Him" is, "the same is He which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost." (7) A lingering spirit delivers the bids we commune with the Lord.

Throughout his life, Yeshua set an example of how we are to linger or tarry before the Lord. Mary and Joseph, parents to the Christ child, misplaced young Jesus when He chose to linger in the temple. (8) On the crucifixion eve, He invited Peter, James, and John to tarry as in prayer an angel ministers to Him. (9)The apostles were unsuccessful at fulfilling His request, instead, they fell asleep. (10) At Gethsemane, Christ, the son, lingered in prayer, before Abba, Father.

The disciples appear to have been moved by the need to abide with their Messiah. Numerous incidents recorded in scripture speak of them seeking the Lord to abide. In Luke, "they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in to abide with them." (11) John wrote that Jesus tarried in the land of Judea baptizing those who came. (12) Having the Lord at one's side stirs the human spirit while departure creates a void. Our souls seek to abide in Him as He abides in us.

"And behold, I send forth the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be clothed with power from on high."(13) Christ promised the Holy Spirit. The "treasures of His glory" empower inner strength through His spirit. (14) They are to tarry in Jerusalem. They are to wait for the one that would come. They are to be expectant. The lingering heightens the awareness of things to come. Watch and wait for the Lord. Greet His arrival with praise and rejoicing! (15) Linger with Him, always drawing nearer to Him.

The early church understood the practice of lingering in the spirit of the Lord. In Acts, they gathered together, remembering, "and they tarried no little time". (16) Paul is reported to have tarried many days with the brethren. (17) The fellowship was encouraged to come together to eat, to tarry with one another. (18) Christ assures us that "where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." (19)

The Lord who lives in high and lofty places wishes to dwell in our spirit.(20) He will strengthen and empower. He will guide, restore, and comfort. Just as He hovered over the waters in the age of creation, so He hovers today over our lives. (21) Make your life a living temple in order that His spirit will feel welcome to abide there. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

The following is a powerful scripture to pray over your life and that of family, friends, and the community of believers. It petitions the Lord to grant power and strength through the Holy Spirit. The Lord is asked that through faith in Jesus each will have deep roots and foundations in order an attempt to know the breadth, length, height, and depth of Christ's love. It gives glory to the Lord, at work filling many generations.

"With this in mind, then, I kneel in prayer to the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name, that out of the treasures of his glory he may grant you inward strength and power through his Spirit, that through faith Christ may dwell in your hearts in love, with deep roots and firm foundations may you, in company with all God’s people, be strong to grasp what is the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ’s love, and to know it, though it is beyond knowledge. So may you be filled with the very fullness of God. Now to him who is able through the power which is at work among us to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or conceive, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus from generation to generation for evermore! Amen" Ephesians 3:14-21

(2) Numbers 9:18-23 (NIV) 18 At the LORD's command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. 19 When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the LORD's order and did not set out. 20 Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the LORD's command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out. 22 Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. 23 At the LORD's command they encamped, and at the LORD's command they set out. (6) Exodus 24:15-18 (NIV) 15 When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, 16 and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. (11) Luke 24:29-32 (ASV) 29 And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. (15) Acts 10:44-48 (ASV) 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Peace, peace, to those far and near," says the LORD. "And I will heal them."
