With Arms Raised High

With such a simplistic message, it seems a visual aid might be in order. The text is from the book of Exodus where the Israelites are preparing for an attack by the Amalekites. The "chosen of the Lord" are gathering their forces. The intricate plan of battle is introduced to Joshua by his chief officer, Moses. In his own words:

"Tomorrow," Moses told him, "I will stand at the top of the hill, with the rod of God in my hand!" Exodus 17:9

Wouldn't that battle plan build confidence with the troops? Moses ~ is going to stand ~ at the top of the hill ~ with the rod of God ~ in his raised hands. There you have it, the minuscule, non-militaristic, yet masterful plan! and magnificent in method because it worked. Here is why.

How difficult a task could it be to stand on a hill with hands raised to the Heavens? Try it. Gravity will begin to take over. Arms become heavy. The staff has a weight of its own. Moses is going to need help.

Aaron and Hur roll a stone under him to provide respite for Moses' weary legs. As elevated arms waiver and lower, the victory turns from Israelites to Amalekites. To ensure the battle, Moses' arms must be up. The day ends triumphant because his companions have kept his hands steady until sunset!

The remarkable outcome of this conquest seems understated when Moses says,
"For hands were lifted up to the throne of the Lord." Exodus 17:16

Sometimes it seems we try to over complicate our conflicts. Look again at Moses' playbook strategy. First, he kept his hands lifted to the Lord. This leaves no doubt that God is in charge. Second, Moses brought very dependable friends along. He Relied on the faithful ones who would be there through to the sunset. God surrounds His people with good companions for times when arms get heavy. Make sure to cultivate these relationships. And finally, Moses gave God control of the battle. God chose Joshua to lead and Moses stepped aside. God plus His people equals His victory, every time, everyday, everything, everlasting.

1 Timothy 4:16 "Keep a close watch on all you do and think. Stay true to what is right and God will bless you and use you to help others."

Whether the intercessor, like Moses; the supporters, like Aaron and Hur; or the warriors, like Joshua and his men; God will use each of us to bring glory to His name. The battle plan is simple. The victory is already won, with eyes on the prize in Heaven, and arms raised UP HIGH! M
