The Power of Tea

Antioxidants are minerals, nutrients, enzymes (proteins), and other compounds that are believed to help reduce chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's, and Rheumatoid arthritis. The antioxidant is effective because it neutralizes free radicals in our body. To put it in my words, the free radicals are bad guys running loose in the body, the antioxidants grab on to them, causing a chain reaction, which at the end of the day, will have the effect of there being  fewer free radicals to cause harm.

With this post, I begin a series of messages on foods that are high in antioxidants. Eating, or in this case drinking, them will by no means be a guarantee that you are safeguarded. Good nutrition and diet are positive ways that you can help your body function in the manner that it was created. Remember to clean your pantry out, removing processed foods, foods containing white sugar and white flour. If you like sugar in your tea, please use unrefined raw cane sugar. It is easy to find at most grocery stores. See the Let's Talk About your Pantry post if you need a reminder of why.

TEA ~ A GREAT ANTIOXIDANT

My husband and I have taken to sipping hot tea each day with our midday meal. My studies reveal the health benefits of tea, especially the traditional black and green varieties.

Here are the most agreed upon benefits of tea.

  • Strengthens the immune system by neutralizing germs
  • The polyphenols help aid in digestion of fatty food
  • The strong antioxidants in tea called catechins rid the body of free radicals
  • Delays the aging process (yeah!)
  • Reduces bad and increases good cholesterol
  • Beneficial in reduction of build up of plaque and some even contain flouride
  • Studies show signs that it reduces risk of stomach, colon, and breast cancers
  • Declogs the arteries and can ward off  heart attack
  • It helps to detox dangerous chemicals in the body
  • Helps to reduce tension
  • Add lemon or orange and it might reduce skin cancer risk
  • Has beneficial vitamins and nutrients ~ see this site for more Enjoying Tea web site
I have found that SAM's Club carries a great little multipack of Bigelow Tea. It has some fun varieties of herbal teas as well as green teas. It also comes in de-caf if you prefer.

Now, get that kettle boiling and take a tea break! M
