The Names of Jehovah ~ Nissi

This series shall expound upon the names attributed to God, by God, throughout the Old Testament. There are others; however, these are the ones which are used in combination with the name of JEHOVAH. Through these descriptors, His almighty character and identity are revealed. Just as they gave comfort and reassurance to the Israelites and their descendents, so too are they relevant today in encouraging believers to seek and know the true JEHOVAH, the great I AM.

JEHOVAH-NISSI
"The Lord Our Banner"

"Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner.  He said, "For hands were lifted up to the throne of the Lord. The Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation." Exodus 17:15-16. Whether at peace or war, nations fly flags over their troops.

Each of the twelve tribes of Israel marched and camped under what they called a "standard". Within the encampment, there were four standards that three collective tribes united under. Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun's symbol was a Lion. Reuben, Simeon, and Gad the Man. Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin the ox and Dan, Asher and Naphtali the Eagle. These banners identified them.

The following verses of scripture describe how the banner of the Lord covers His people with security, identity, and victory:

Isaiah 49:22 "This is what the Sovereign Lord says: "See, I will beckon to the Gentiles, I will lift up my banner to the peoples; they will bring your sons in their arms and carry your daughters on their shoulders."

Isaiah 59:19 "So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him."

Jeremiah 51:12 "Lift up a banner against the walls of Babylon! Reinforce the guard, station the watchmen, prepare an ambush! The Lord will carry out his purpose, his decree against the people of Babylon."

We too, as Christians, rally under the banner of Christ. We lift the standard high and shout Hosanna, as in Matthew, "Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest."

He covers and protects us with His shed blood. The battle is won, the victory is His. Invite the Lord to be the banner over your camp. Over your household. Over your family. Over you. M
