This series shall expound upon the names attributed to God, by God, throughout the Old Testament. There are others; however, these are the ones which are used in combination with the name of JEHOVAH. Through these descriptors, His almighty character and identity are revealed. Just as they gave comfort and reassurance to the Israelites and their descendents, so too are they relevant today in encouraging believers to seek and know the true JEHOVAH, the great I AM.
Hebrew scribes would not write the name of the Lord in text as it was revered, deemed too holy and sacred to be read aloud. For that reason, they would write the name without vowel points. In Hebrew that read, YHWH from which came YAHWEH. When translated into English, it reads JHVH from which came JEHOVAH.
God actually told man what to call him. When the Lord summons Moses to deliver the Israelites from Egyptian captivity, Moses asks, whom shall I say sent me? " ’The Sovereign God,’ " was the reply. "Just say, ’I Am has sent me!’ Yes, tell them, ’Jehovah, the God of your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has sent me to you.’ (This is my eternal name, to be used throughout all generations.) Exodus 3:14-15
JEHOVAH-JIREH means "The Lord will Provide"
The Bible tells us that "Abraham named the place "Jehovah provides"—and it still goes by that name to this day." (Genesis 22:14) The place is Mount Moriah. The place is where God sent Abraham to sacrifice his only son Isaac. The place is where God provided a ram as a substitute for the life of Isaac.
In later years, the place is also the location of Soloman's temple. The Lord provided a place for His people to worship. Is it not surprising that not far from this site, outside of the gates of Jerusalem, at a place named Mount Golgotha, another sacrifice was made. Again God intervened and provided the perfect lamb for sacrifice. Whose life was saved this time? Yours and Mine. Who stood in our place? Who did God provide? Jesus Christ.
We are reminded of this in Philippians 4:19 "And it is he who will supply all your needs from his riches in glory because of what Christ Jesus has done for us."
The Lord will always make provision for His people. He will not leave them wanting. Jesus says in Matthew 7:11, "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?"
Tonight, when you pray, be sure to thank the Lord for his provisions of food, shelter, clothing, labor, and most importantly, salvation which safeguards your eternity. Luke 14:15 reads "Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God." The feast awaits, God has provided, are you ready? M
