The Names of Jehovah ~ Rophe

This series shall expound upon the names attributed to God, by God, throughout the Old Testament. There are others; however, these are the ones which are used in combination with the name of JEHOVAH. Through these descriptors, His almighty character and identity are revealed. Just as they gave comfort and reassurance to the Israelites and their descendents, so too are they relevant today in encouraging believers to seek and know the true JEHOVAH, the great I AM.

JEHOVAH - ROPHE
"The Lord Who Heals"

And the Lord said, "If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee." (Exodus 15:26)

The Israelites journeyed in the wilderness of Shur for three days with no water. They were an unhappy encampment. In Marah they found water, but it was bitter and unfit to consume. At this point, the Lord sets out a "statute and ordinance". He stipulates his commitment with, IF. If they will harken to His voice. If they will do what is right. If they will give ear to His commandments. If they will keep all of His statues. THEN, He will not put the same plagues and disease on them that be brought upon the Egyptians.

The Lord JEHOVAH is our healer. We call upon Him for physical, spiritual, and emotional wellness. His love, strength, and hope will restore us: body, soul, and mind. Not only will He heal us as individuals, He will intercede and heal a nation. 2 Chronicles 7:14 "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

And, if He will heal our land, will He not heal things more intimate and personal to our character? Replace the word "land" with "pride", "vanity", "greed", "addictions". I am sure you can think of more. Both scriptures cited above are predicated with "if". The Lord JEHOVAH is the one who healeth, but He demands our love and loyalty.

Isaiah 53:5 reads, "but he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed." These words, from the prophet Isaiah, prepare us for the spiritual and eternal healing that comes from the shed blood of Jesus. Then, from Luke 4:18, we read the words of Christ,  "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,"

The healing power never stops. It is a continuous, unbroken covenant between God, JEHOVAH, and His people. Jesus says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) Healing and rest.  How powerful is our Lord!

Sleep well tonight in the arms of a gracious and merciful savior, the source of all healing. M
